The Sweet Pea Fairies

As a child my grandma encouraged me to find inspiration to work from and not try to recreate something from my head. One of the most useful peices of advise I have been given. For christmas around 2001 I recieved 'A Flower Fairies Treasury' by Cicely Mary Barker. For those of you that are familiar with the Flower Fairies you will know how the illustrations capture the innocence of children and the poems are still beautiful to read as an adult. Since starting secondary school I have been interested in poetry and lyrics, singing is a big part of my life (people around me do get fed up with it) I include song lyrics in my work and now going into textiles I want to explore and see how to apply words to fabrics. For the rest of you that are not familiar with this book or her work this is my favourite fairy. My childhood fairies just for you:

The Sweet Pea Fairies.

Another Poem I would like to share with you is 'If'' by Rudyard Kipling, a poem that I was re-introduced to just this morning;

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

Blackpool drawings

A few drawings that I did at Blackpool comp, havn't been doing much drawing lately so these sketches are a little rough but I got good feedback from friends. Two are of the architecture and the other is my friend Annabel, it doesn't look like her but the proportions of the face are ok I think. A month off for easter will give me plenty of time to catch up!

Lily flower

My first lily flower came out a few days ago. White lillies are a special favourite of mine.

Blackpool Dancesport Competition

Last weekend I attended IVDC which was held in Blackpool Winter Gardens Ballroom. Whilst taking photographs of my friends dancing I was also looking at the costume. The intermediate and and advanced dancers have all sorts of dresses and outfits, it was interesting to see which caught the judges attention.
<-- So cute!

Knit part 1

Nearly there.. Probably should have started a blog earlier on in the year. So after Christmas we started a knit project using photographs we had taken ourselves with texture. I found some I had taken in April of last year when the flowers were all out in bloom. It had rained the day before which left a gathering of raindrops on the flowers that were lit up by the morning sunlight.
Here are a few sketchbook development pieces and when I get my knit folder from uni tomorrow I shall post the knitwork.

First semester project outcomes

At the beginning of the year we looked at mark making and how to create texture in drawings, our inspiration were flowers and these are my a couple of my final outcomes. For the second half the objective was to create repeat patterns from what we had done before..
